Swatch Nines isn't one of those events.
Instead, it has built a reputation as one of the most creative weeks in BMX, giving riders the freedom to experiment on purpose-built features that simply don't exist anywhere else. Hosted once again in Sölden, Austria, the 2026 edition brought together some of the biggest names in BMX and mountain biking to push the limits of what's possible on two wheels.
Rather than focusing on medals, Swatch Nines focuses on progression.
The course itself looked more like a giant playground than a traditional contest venue. Massive hips, technical plazas, flowing transfers and unique lines gave riders endless opportunities to think outside the box. One of the standout moments came during the now-famous Night Session, where the atmosphere shifted entirely. With the course lit under the Austrian evening sky, riders seemed to feed off the energy, throwing down some of the biggest and most stylish tricks of the week. It wasn't about impressing judges—it was about pushing each other, celebrating progression and having fun on bikes.
Another thing that separates Swatch Nines from traditional competitions is the riders themselves.
Instead of arriving solely to compete, many come to collaborate. You'll often see riders helping each other dial in tricks, sharing ideas, celebrating landings and encouraging attempts that, in another setting, might never even be tried. It's one of the few events where competition takes a back seat to creativity.
That spirit has become one of the reasons Swatch Nines remains such an important date on the BMX calendar.
While contest riding continues to evolve with bigger spins, more technical combinations and increasingly difficult runs, events like this remind us that BMX has always been about expression.
